SoftEther VPN Client
Configure VPN with SoftEther VPN Client when a regular VPN connection does not work
SoftEther is an alternative for Windows when the network blocks L2TP/IPsec. It uses a separate client and SSTV's TCP listener.
Install
- Visit the official SoftEther downloads.
- Choose SoftEther VPN Client for your Windows architecture and install it. VPN Server and the VPN Gate public-server plugin are not needed.
- Open SoftEther VPN Client Manager. Create a Virtual Network Adapter named SSTV when prompted.
Configure
Get your VPN username and password from the dashboard.
| Server | Address |
|---|---|
| SE | se.sstv.se |
| SE1 | se1.sstv.se |
| UK | uk.sstv.se |
| NO | no.sstv.se |
| FI | fi.sstv.se |
| DE | de.sstv.se |
| US | us.sstv.se |
L2TP/IPsec: get the pre-shared key from the dashboard. Your VPN username and password are on the account page. SoftEther uses TCP 992 and hub DEFAULT. The SE and SE1 OpenVPN profiles use UDP 1194; other country profiles use TCP 465 or 443.
- Choose Add VPN Connection and name it SSTV.
- Use a hostname from the table above, port 992 and Virtual Hub Name DEFAULT.
- Select RADIUS or NT Domain Authentication and enter your SSTV VPN credentials.
- Select your virtual adapter and enable Always Verify Server Certificate before saving. This option is off by default.
- Open Manage Trusted CA Certificate List and confirm the trusted CA for SSTV, or use Specify Individual Cert with a server certificate verified through SSTV support. Confirm the expected server identity and fingerprint with support if trust is not already established.
- Save and double-click the connection. Cancel any unexpected or untrusted certificate warning and contact support. Keep verification enabled; do not accept an unverified certificate to continue.
The IPsec pre-shared key is not used here. SSTV's website uses TCP 443 on the current infrastructure; leave this connection on TCP 992.
Daily use
Wait for Connected before opening your application. Right-click the connection and choose Disconnect when finished.
For authentication failures, check your VPN service credentials and active access. For timeouts, try another network or OpenVPN. Create the virtual adapter in the manager if it is missing.
See the SoftEther connection manual for the client controls.
