Share a VPN connection
Share an SSTV connection from Windows with a TV or another device
For devices without a VPN client, you can try Windows Internet Connection Sharing with SoftEther's virtual adapter. The computer must stay awake and connected; Wi-Fi must support Mobile hotspot.
Prepare
- Set up SoftEther, connect and check internet access on the computer.
- In Settings → Network & internet → Mobile hotspot, select the connection under Share my internet connection from. Choose the SoftEther connection if listed, set a network name and password, select Wi-Fi sharing and enable the hotspot. If SoftEther is not listed, assign its virtual adapter using the sharing steps below and verify the downstream device's public IP before use.
- Press Windows + R, enter ncpa.cpl and open Network Connections.
- Identify the SoftEther virtual adapter and the hotspot adapter. The latter may say Local Area Connection with a number or Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter. Watch which appears when enabling the hotspot if unsure.
See Microsoft's Mobile hotspot instructions for the Windows controls.
Share the VPN adapter
- Right-click the SoftEther virtual adapter, open Properties → Sharing and allow other network users to connect through it.
- Select the hotspot adapter as the home networking connection and apply. The connection being shared must be the VPN adapter.
- Connect your TV or other device to the hotspot.
- Check internet access and the outgoing public IP on that device. A working hotspot alone does not prove that traffic uses the VPN.
Some drivers, policies and adapter combinations do not support this arrangement. If Sharing is missing or the device does not use the VPN, use a router or SmartDNS.
Finish and troubleshoot
If the VPN drops, stop using the shared connection until you check the route again; sharing is not a guaranteed kill switch. To finish, disable Mobile hotspot, clear adapter sharing and disconnect the VPN.
If there is no internet, confirm SoftEther is connected, check the shared adapter and reconnect the device. Do not disable Windows Firewall or install the old guide's third-party hotspot utility.
