Choose a connection method
Choose VPN, Proxy or SmartDNS based on your device and network
SSTV offers three different ways to connect. Start with the one your device and application support; configure one method at a time so you can verify its effect.
| Method | Best starting point | What you configure | Account requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN | Computer, phone or a router with a VPN client | VPN connection or imported profile | VPN service username and password |
| Proxy | Browser or device that supports automatic proxy configuration | SSTV PAC URL | Registered public IPv4 |
| SmartDNS | TV, streaming device or router with configurable DNS | SSTV DNS server address | Registered public IPv4 |
Computer or phone
Use VPN when the application needs traffic routed through the VPN connection. Guides cover Windows, Mac, iPhone/iPad, Android and Chromebook.
For a browser with automatic proxy support, Proxy is an alternative. SSTV's PAC file selects which domains go through the proxy; other destinations connect directly. An unrelated IP-check website can therefore show your ordinary IP even when the proxy is configured correctly. Apps that ignore the system or browser proxy settings need another method.
TV or streaming device
Start with SmartDNS if the device allows manual DNS settings. A router-level DNS setting can cover devices that use the router's DNS configuration, but a device or browser with its own resolver can bypass it.
If the device cannot use SmartDNS or a proxy, consider Windows connection sharing. Confirm the device is actually using that network path.
Restricted or changing networks
On a hotel or public Wi-Fi network, complete the network's sign-in first. If L2TP/IPsec is blocked, try OpenVPN, or SoftEther on Windows. OpenVPN uses UDP 1194; SoftEther uses TCP 992. A network may block either, so changing protocol is not a guarantee.
For Proxy or SmartDNS, register the network's current public IPv4 from the dashboard. Turn VPN and other proxies off first and use the same router as the target device. A phone on mobile data does not register the home router's address.
What to expect
SmartDNS configures name resolution; it does not establish a VPN tunnel or change your public IP for every destination. PAC-based Proxy is selective. VPN routing depends on the client and its settings, including IPv6 and split routing.
No method guarantees that a particular streaming service will accept the connection. Use your own service subscription where required and check the actual connection after setup.
